Ster Kinekor and SMAC team up – Clockwork’s first Facebook game
One of Clockwork Media’s longest standing clients, Ster Kinekor Entertainment, recently asked us to conceptualise and develop a game that would run in a Facebook application format.
The idea was to come up with something that would create awareness around the film Looper, which was recently released in South Africa on Blu-ray and DVD. We also had the opportunity to partner with SMAC – the guys and girls who distribute the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 in South Africa.
The AR Drone 2.0 is pretty much one of the coolest tech gadgets money can buy, so we were really happy to have SMAC on board for the project. If you aren’t familiar with these awesome devices, check out the following video.
We immediately set about designing and building a game that would incorporate themes from the movie, as well as provide a basic showcase of the Parrot AR Drone’s capabilities. The result was a side scrolling platform game, in which players are tasked with controlling a flying drone and keeping it alive for as long as possible while enemy drones try to shoot it down.
The five participants who posted the longest survival time would each win themselves a Parrot AR Drone 2.0.
In our initial testing, we were able to post times of around 3 minutes. Within 24 hours of the game going live, our high scores were put to shame as the most competitive among participants managed to post times of around 20 minutes.
In order to maximise the promotion’s reach, we used Facebook’s promoted post feature as well as a selection of dedicated Facebook ads. Within a week 57, 325 South Africans had been exposed to the promotional content, and of those, 454 users had posted scores.
