Clockwork is looking for a Strategist with 3-5 years experience in creating and developing marketing, communication and/or digital strategies for a broad spectrum of clients. Experience working on technology or IT-based client accounts will be a bonus. 

The strategist needs to be proactive, curious, and forward-thinking with a passion for solving problems. We are seeking a team player who takes a collaborative approach, with a focus on building and retaining strong relationships with clients. 

You will be working with a team of highly capable strategists servicing the whole agency, on some of the most interesting client brands in South Africa and internationally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a range of strategies from content and social, to digital and communication strategies aligned to the client’s brand and centred on achieving the client’s business objectives
  • Receive, interrogate, and interpret briefs
  • Gather research and interpret data findings into strategic insights; and apply these into the strategic approach
  • Design, execute and oversee research projects and compile research reports
  • Deliver strategies that are ultimately functional, actionable, and implementable
  • Work closely with internal teams such as the social, creative, media, data, and PR teams to gather strategic input from their area of expertise, while also delivering strategic direction to these teams on an ongoing basis
  • Provide strategic direction on a day-to-day basis to drive the client’s business forward; working closely with the account management teams to add value and grow client accounts strategically
  • Be involved in projects from inception to completion; ensuring projects are aligned to the strategy and the client’s objectives and KPIs
  • Present strategies to client and internal teams
  • Maintain an ‘umbrella’ perspective; provide ongoing strategic support and advice to clients, such as environmental or competitor shifts that may impact on the strategy and instigate a change in strategic direction
  • Provide and share strategic thought leadership and emerging trend insights internally, to the business and externally, to clients
  • Provide strategic guidance and input on pitches and proposals
  • Be able to work with minimal supervision and deliver to deadline
  • Ability to conduct research and write thought pieces, blogs or articles

Essential Skills and Experience

To perform this job successfully, you must be able to perform each key duty satisfactorily:

  • Ability to interpret briefs, identify the core challenge and develop an approach to answer the challenge
  • Ability to apply various strategic frameworks or strategy methodologies including but not limited to competitor reviews; consumer trends and insights development; client brand and channel reviews; business environment reviews; messaging frameworks and channel tactics
  • Ability to find and interpret a research in various forms, analyse research findings and identify insights or actions
  • Ability to conduct research, including but not limited to surveys, vox pops, telephonic interviews
  • Be tuned in to emerging trends, news of the day, and cultural insights
  • Exceptional written and oral English communication skills
  • Presentation skills are a must
  • Interpersonal skills – ability to engage with clients and with internal teams to drive strategies forward
  • Collaborative in nature, a team player
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and creatively answer challenges
  • Experience working with blue chip clients, particularly local or global technology/IT brands is preferred
